The ATTC Butterfly 7th Annual Kenneth Beauchamp High Dollar Cap was a resounding success, defined by fierce competition and incredible local talent. Against a highly competitive field, players from the Austin Table Tennis Club and the University of Texas successfully defended their home turf. Over the course of the weekend, many ATTC members achieved remarkable podium finishes, deep playoff runs, significant upsets, and well-deserved USATT rating increases.
Here is a look at the standout performances from our local players.
Under 2450 RR
Sambit Kanjilal:
The Action: Sambit navigated a treacherous group stage undefeated, dropping only one game in the preliminary rounds. His ability to maintain composure under pressure against top-tier talent was truly a highlight of the weekend.
The Results: The co-captain of the 26/27 UT Table Tennis Team showcased incredible resilience in this elite division, advancing all the way to the semifinals to earn a 3rd Place finish.
Alan Xian:
The Action: Alan proved he could hang with the best by advancing out of a very competitive Group 3 with a 2-1 record. His aggressive topspin rallies kept opponents on the defensive all day.
The Results: Delivered a deep playoff run by reaching the quarterfinals.
Arnav Rao:
The Action: Arnav's strategic serve-and-attack game helped him navigate past tough challengers in his round-robin pool. He consistently found ways to exploit his opponents' weaknesses to secure his spot in the knockout bracket.
The Results: Displayed sharp tactical skills to also advance to the quarterfinals.
Under 2100 RR
Sambit Kanjilal:
The Action: Sambit steamrolled the competition without dropping a single match in his initial group. His commanding presence and tactical precision made him the undisputed champion of the division.
The Results: Put on a masterclass performance to completely dominate the division, capturing the 1st Place Championship.
Alan Xian:
The Action: Alan swept his initial group flawlessly before taking down higher-rated competition in the knockout stage. His footwork and pacing were absolutely on point from start to finish.
The Results: Reached the quarterfinals and secured a massive 3-1 upset victory in the Round of 16 against an opponent rated over 2000 (1994 vs. 2015).
Arnav Rao:
The Action: Arnav executed his game plan perfectly in the round-robin phase to take the top seed in his group with a 3-0 record. His powerful forehand loop was a consistent weapon during the knockout rounds.
The Results: Punched his ticket to the playoff bracket, successfully advancing to the quarterfinals.
Ahaan Pamnani:
The Action: Ahaan showed excellent determination in the preliminary rounds to secure a 2-1 record and punch his ticket to the main draw. This playoff experience will undoubtedly fuel his training heading into the next season.
The Results: Fought his way out of the group stage to qualify for the Round of 16 playoffs.
Jeremey Lopez:
The Action: Jeremey's fighting spirit was on full display during the preliminary rounds. He refused to give up easily, battling for every single point to pull off this spectacular win.
The Results: Scored a gritty, hard-earned 3-2 upset victory during the group stage over a 1646-rated opponent, despite entering with a 1548 rating.
Under 1900 RR
Mehrdad Moghaddami
The Action: Mehrdad swept Group 2 with a 3-0 record and battled his way to the finals, pushing the championship match to a nail-biting fifth game.
The Results: Captured a 2nd Place podium finish.
Oreoluwa Banwo:
The Action: Oreoluwa's shocking victory over a heavily favored opponent sent ripples through the playing hall. It was a testament to his focused mindset and unwavering confidence at the table.
The Results: Pulled off the statistical upset of the tournament, taking down an opponent rated 1619 in a 3-2 thriller while rated only 1313.
Zephan Shivam:
The Action: Zephan successfully navigated a tricky group stage with a 2-1 record to make his mark in the knockout bracket. His ability to adapt to different playing styles was key to his success.
The Results: Advanced to the playoff round and scored a dominant 3-0 sweep over a 1655-rated player, despite a 1407 rating.
Charles Oberg:
The Action: Charles kept the crowd on the edge of their seats with this thrilling five-game victory. His clutch performance under pressure shows he has a bright competitive future ahead.
The Results: Fought tooth-and-nail for a brilliant 3-2 upset win against a formidable 1773-rated competitor.
Under 1600 RR
Hazel Mott:
The Action: Hazel swept Group 3 flawlessly in the preliminary rounds. He utilized aggressive tactics to overpower his opponents all the way through the playoff bracket.
The Results: Crowned the 1st Place Champion of the division. This is the 2nd time Hazel has won the U1600 event following his 1st place finish in the Mega Money this past June.
Ellie Kim:
The Action: Ellie showcased incredible stamina and consistency throughout the exhausting tournament schedule by sweeping her group 3-0. Her defensive blocks and well-timed counter-attacks frustrated opponents all the way to the championship match.
The Results: Put on a marathon performance, fighting her way through a dense field to reach the finals and capture 2nd Place.
Zephan Shivam:
The Action: Zephan proved to be a formidable contender by topping his group with a 3-1 record in the preliminary rounds. His fierce competitive drive carried him deep into the medal rounds.
The Results: Continued his strong tournament showing by reaching the semifinals to secure 3rd Place.
Under 1300 RR
Ellie Kim:
The Action: Ellie handled the pressure of multiple events with the grace of a seasoned veteran, sweeping her group untouched.
The Results: Added another medal to her weekend haul by advancing to the semifinals and taking 3rd Place. This third podium finish of the weekend perfectly capped off her extraordinary performance.
Under 3200 Doubles RR
Tareq Zaman & Korim Ahmed
The Action: This duo proved to be an unstoppable force, sweeping Group 1 with a flawless 3-0 record without dropping a single game.
The Results: Captured the 1st Place Championship in the top doubles division
Alan Xian & YanYan Hao:
The Action: The duo demonstrated exceptional teamwork and communication throughout the group stages. Their chemistry on the table was a major factor in their deep and successful tournament run.
The Results: This powerhouse Warrior duo fought their way through the bracket to secure a fantastic 2nd Place podium finish.
Clark Kim & Ellie Kim:
The Action: This pair showed great resilience against higher-rated teams. They managed to secure a crucial win in their initial group to guarantee their spot on the podium.
The Results: Joining forces to represent Austin, this tandem reached the semifinals to take home 3rd Place.
