If you’ve visited the Austin Table Tennis Club recently, you might have noticed some colorful new additions. Thanks to an incredibly generous, anonymous donation from one of our amazing club members, we’ve officially upgraded our facility with some top-tier fitness equipment. The donor had one specific wish: use these funds entirely to supercharge our Austin youth table tennis program.
ATTC head coach, Shahin Akhlaghpasand, took on the responsibility of picking out the perfect new gear to transform how our junior players compete.
Shaking Up Our Routine: The New Gear
Table tennis is a sport of extreme precision, but a player is only as good as their physical foundation. Coach Shahin selected three specific types of equipment to target stability, agility, and core strength.
Finding Balance on the Wobble Balls
First up on the list were the wobble balance balls and half exercise balls. If you've ever seen someone try to stand on one of these without flailing their arms, you know it's tougher than it looks. But why do table tennis players need them?
The goal is for the kids to stand on the ball and practice "shaking less," which translates directly to better body control.
"Your opponent is always trying to move you around to throw you off your center and make you lose your balance," Coach Shahin explained. "That is why table tennis needs a lot of stability."
By training on these wobble balls, our junior players are developing a rock-solid foundation so they can stay anchored and recover instantly, no matter how hard they are pushed out of position.
Building Explosive Agility and Stamina
Next, you'll see a set of adjustable step platforms. Coach Shahin is using these to run specialized agility and cardio drills. This isn't just about quick feet; it's about building explosive motion.
Coach Shahin brought up a term you usually hear in high-performance athletic labs: VO2 max, which measures your body’s aerobic capacity. Because table tennis requires an incredibly efficient respiratory system, these steps are the secret weapon to keeping our youth players fast and energized. The higher a player's VO2 max, the longer they can sustain high-level play during grueling, multi-game matches without wearing down.
Core Strength with Medicine Balls
Finally, we have added a variety of 6-pound and 10-pound medicine balls. Coach Shahin deliberately chose two different weights to accommodate the wide range of ages in our Austin youth table tennis program. The lighter 6-pound balls allow the smaller kids to train safely without the risk of injury, while the 10-pounders give the older kids a real challenge.
The main focus here is strengthening the core muscles through rotational exercises. A great table tennis shot doesn't just come from a quick wrist—it starts in the legs, rotates through the core, and transfers power through the arm. These balls are perfect for sharpening that rotation and overall body coordination.
Good News for the Rest of Us!
Now, our adult members may be thinking: Do the kids get to have all the fun? Not quite! While our junior players get strict priority during their official training hours, Coach Shahin shared some great news for the rest of the ATTC community. Whenever the Austin youth table tennis program isn't using the gear, the rest of the club is more than welcome to use it. Whether you want to work on your own balance, sneak in some cardio, or strengthen your core for your next weekend tournament, it’s all yours.
But fair warning—Coach Shahin has one very strict condition:
"They have to promise to return it back to the rack!"
We are incredibly fortunate to have such a supportive community and a coaching staff that cares so deeply about cultivating the next generation of players. Next time you're at the club, take a look at the new setup, and if you see Coach Shahin, ask him how you can integrate some of these drills into your own practice!
